This case started as an insurance bad faith case and ended up turning into an eight-year long battle with Wells Fargo. When James Dollens fell to his death at the General Mills cereal factory in 2010 he had a mortgage with Wells Fargo and an accidental death mortgage policy in place that would pay his mortgage off. Minnesota Life, the insurer, initially denied the claim, saying that the death was a suicide. John and Katy Duhigg were hired to appeal the denial and a few months later Minnesota Life reversed its denial and sent Wells a check for more than enough to pay the mortgage off. In the meantime, Wells had dived into a robust program of “property preservation” where they charged the Dollens account for repeated “work orders” for things that were never actually done. And then it went from bad to worse…
